Ben Tre - The Coconut Province

Ben Tre is the most island-like province in the Mekong Delta - not technically an island, but almost entirely surrounded by Mekong distributaries: the Tien River to the north, the Co Chien River to the south, and a network of smaller channels crisscrossing the interior. Coconut palms cover roughly 70,000 hectares here, and the province produces most of Vietnam's commercial coconut output: oil, candy, handicrafts, coir rope. In every direction, the tree line is coconut palms. After an hour of the open-sky expressway corridor, the density of greenery in Ben Tre feels like a different country.

It's also quieter than most Mekong Delta destinations. My Tho (just across the bridge in Tien Giang) gets most of the day-trippers from Ho Chi Minh City. Ben Tre gets fewer visitors and keeps a pace that feels genuinely local — small-boat ferries, family-run guesthouses on the riverbanks, bicycles rather than motorbikes on some of the narrower lanes between coconut groves.
