• Sleeper bus: From either Ninh Binh or Hanoi to either Dong Hoi City or Phong Nha. They depart late night and arrive to Phong Nha early in the morning. It's the cheap one with regular schedule and shared cabin space.

Arrival in Phong Nha

The landscape that unfolds upon descent into the province of Quang Binh is Phong Nha-Kebang's jungled karst - entirely different limestone to what was seen in Ninh Binh. Your driver makes the exit off of CT01 and takes you down the access roads to your hotel in Phong Nha village or even direct to your resort destination. What to Do at Phong Nha

• Phong Nha Cave -  This is the cave which provided the park its name. Reachable by a boat on the Son River which will ferry you to the cave interior via its entrance. Boat journey brings you 1.5km into the mountain. This cave provides a more peaceful and accessible experience compared to trekking caves – good for everyone of any age. Tickets can be bought directly at the boats or the guest house.
• Paradise Cave (Thien Duong) - 31 km in length with some of the most stunning cave scenery in Southeast Asia. This cave can be visited up to 1km into its interior where you get a feel of how grand this cave really is. Additional ticket purchase and an electric cart ride to the entrance is required. Recommended if you have to choose just one cave out of several.
• Dark Cave (Hang Toi) -  More adventurous cave experience, including kayaking, zipline adventure, swimming in mud bath, and exploring parts of the cave in total darkness. A more physical experience but much more fun! Book ahead in high season.
• Son Doong Expedition - The largest cave in the world in terms of volume; an intense 4-day adventure experience organized by Oxalis Adventure. Limited permits issued each year; if this is your primary reason to visit Phong Nha, make sure you book ahead many months – the expedition normally sells out several months before the beginning of the main season.
• Phong Nha village and the Son River - Village itself is tiny and quite charming. There are guesthouses and restaurants by the river with pace of life not ruined by the tourists' presence yet. In any case, it is a nice walk along the river at night after exploring caves in daytime, and worth staying two days rather than just one.

Travel Notes

• Depart by 7 AM to arrive by early afternoon: Leaving at 7 AM will get you to Phong Nha by 12:30 PM after a brief stop halfway through your journey. This allows you to have the afternoon free to check into your accommodation, make bookings for the caves you want to visit tomorrow, and take a walk along the Son River. A 9 AM departure time works too, but you will arrive at your destination later in the day with less daylight.
• Book cave tours before you arrive: The popular Paradise Cave and Dark Cave sell out quickly during the busy seasons. Expedition permits for Son Doong Cave are sold months in advance. While booking your boat rides at Phong Nha Cave can be done at your destination, it is better to pre-book all other caves that need timed entry and a guided tour.
• Avoid September to November if possible: During the autumn season, Quang Binh province experiences heavy rainfalls, which may lead to flooding in some sections of the cave network. This is especially true for specific jungle trails in Phong Nha Cave. The best period to visit is from February to August.
• Withdraw cash before leaving Ninh Binh: ATMs in Phong Nha village are operational, but cannot guarantee availability for foreigner's card usage, especially during weekends where they may run out of cash from domestic visitors. In order to withdraw cash that may be used for entering caves or paying deposits for guesthouses, ensure this happens prior to the CT01 trip.
• Provide your exact Phong Nha accommodation address: Some accommodation providers are situated off-road and even away from the directions available in the app. It is better to give a GPS pin or your address that includes the name of the road in case your accommodation isn't listed on an online reservation site.
• Plan at least 2 nights in Phong Nha:  At least a minimum of 1-day is needed to enjoy visiting caves from the effort spent traveling; however, with 2 days, you can visit Paradise Cave the first day and either Phong Nha Cave or Dark Cave the second day. There is enough reason to stay overnight in Phong Nha Village.
