How to pick the car: look at the luggage as well as the number of people. Three people with three large suitcases will be more comfortable in the medium SUV than in a sedan. If you are not sure, send us the number of bags and we will tell you.
From Phong Nha the car first goes to Dong Hoi, about 45 km and just under an hour. From Dong Hoi the road heads south along the coast through Quang Binh into Quang Tri province, passes Dong Ha and Quang Tri town, and enters Hue from the north.
Depending on traffic, the driver uses Highway 1 or the newer sections of the North–South Expressway. The road is flat and in good condition the whole way, so this is an easy drive even for people who get car sick on mountain roads.

Good places for a coffee or toilet break are Dong Hoi and Dong Ha. For lunch, Dong Ha has simple local restaurants; tell the driver what you like and he will stop at a clean place.
Because the drive is short, you can leave at almost any time of day. What matters is whether you want to stop on the way.

Leave in the morning. Most sites close in the late afternoon, and they are mostly outdoors, so the morning is cooler and more pleasant.
Tell us which tour you are on. The evening before, we check the real start time with the tour company and send the driver to your hotel shortly before you get back. Your bags can stay at reception. After a wet or muddy tour, just tell us if you need some time to shower and change before leaving.
Central Vietnam has its rainy season from about September to December, with the heaviest rain and occasional flooding in October and November. On those days the drive can take longer. From May to August it is hot, so stops in the middle of the day are tiring – another reason to leave early if you want to see the sites.
Between 1954 and 1975 the area around the 17th parallel, on the border of today’s Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces, was the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Vietnam. Several well-known sites are on or close to the road to Hue. You can add any of them to your transfer without changing the car price.

The Ben Hai River was the dividing line between North and South Vietnam for 21 years, and Hien Luong Bridge was the crossing point. The bridge you see today has been rebuilt in its original form, with one half painted in each side’s colour. On the riverbank there is a monument, a flag tower and a small museum with photos from the period. It is right next to the highway, so it costs you very little time.
When the area was bombed heavily from the mid-1960s, villagers from Vinh Moc dug a tunnel system into the red earth near the sea and moved underground. It has three levels, small family rooms, wells and even a room where babies were born. Parts are lit and open to visitors, and the exits lead out onto the beach.
Practical points: the tunnels are narrow and low, so you will need to bend in places. Wear shoes with grip. If someone in your group does not like tight spaces, they can wait at the museum or by the sea. This is the stop most people find most interesting, so if you only choose one, choose this.
The national cemetery for soldiers who died on the Ho Chi Minh Trail (the Truong Son road). There are more than ten thousand graves arranged by home province on a hillside. It is a quiet, respectful place: cover your shoulders and knees and keep your voice down. It is a detour from the main road, so it makes sense only if you have time.
One of the most important Catholic sites in Vietnam. According to local tradition, in 1798 the Virgin Mary appeared here to Catholics who were hiding in the forest. The site has a large new basilica, the bullet-marked ruins of the old church tower and quiet gardens. It is close to the highway and fits well as a last stop before Hue. Modest clothing is expected inside the church.
With the free 60 minutes of waiting, most travelers pick two stops – for example Hien Luong Bridge and Vinh Moc, or Vinh Moc and La Vang. All four is possible, but it turns a 4-hour transfer into a 7-hour day and adds waiting charges. The driver is not a tour guide; he can tell you the basics, but if you want detailed history, consider a guided DMZ tour instead.

When the bus makes sense: you travel alone or as a couple, have light luggage and no fixed arrival time.
When the car makes sense: you are three or more people, carry big bags, travel with children, want to see the DMZ sites, or are leaving right after a cave tour. For a group of three or four, the car costs only a few dollars more per person than the bus, and you skip the transfers at both ends.
