Dong Hoi is the nearest city to Phong Nha and the place most travelers pass through on the way in or out: it has the airport, the railway station on the North–South line and the hotels along Nhat Le Beach. The drive is short – 50 to 57 km depending on where you are going, and 45 to 60 minutes by car.
Because this transfer is so often tied to a flight or a train, timing matters more than distance. A private car leaves from your hotel or homestay at the time you choose, goes straight to the airport, the station or your hotel, and does not stop at other hotels to collect passengers. One price per car, one way, to any address in Dong Hoi – including the airport and the railway station. Driver, fuel and any tolls are included. Very early or late pick-ups for first and last flights cost the same.
Dong Hoi Airport is on the north side of the city, and the drive from Phong Nha usually takes about an hour. Flights from here are domestic, mainly to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
For a domestic flight we suggest being at the airport about 90 minutes before departure. Add the drive and a small buffer, and you get a simple rule: leave Phong Nha about 2.5 hours before your flight.

The station is in the city, and Dong Hoi is a stop for most trains on the North–South line, including night trains to Hanoi and trains south to Hue and Da Nang. Plan to be at the station 30 to 45 minutes before departure, so leave Phong Nha about 1.5 to 2 hours before your train.
If you are coming straight off a cave tour, tell us the tour name and its usual finish time. We will make sure there is enough time to collect your bags at the hotel before heading to the station.
Many travelers spend a night in Dong Hoi before an early flight or after a long cave day. Most hotels are either in the city centre or along Nhat Le Beach, both about an hour from Phong Nha. We drop you at the door.
If you have some spare time, the driver can stop for 10 to 15 minutes at Nhat Le Beach on the way, at no extra charge.
The road from Phong Nha follows the Son River valley east and then runs towards the coast through rice fields and small villages. It is paved all the way and there are no mountain passes, so it is an easy drive even for people who get car sick. As you reach Dong Hoi you cross the Nhat Le River into the city.
