Cat Tien National Park - What You're Arriving At

Cat Tien National Park covers about 72,000 hectares of lowland tropical rainforest across three provinces Lâm Đồng, Đồng Nai, and Bình Phước. It's one of the last remaining large lowland forest areas in southern Vietnam and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Đồng Nai River runs through the park; the boat crossing from the mainland side to the park interior is part of the experience.

What distinguishes Cat Tien from other national parks in Vietnam is that it's genuinely accessible without specialised trekking equipment, but also genuinely wild. Night drives on the park road — done in open-top jeeps with rangers — regularly produce gaur (Asian bison), sambar deer, civets, and on lucky nights, leopard cats. The bird list is over 350 species. The forest at dawn, before the heat arrives, is one of the better sensory experiences available in southern Vietnam.

When to go:

• December to April (dry season): Best window for wildlife. The forest floor is dry enough to walk, the trails are accessible, and animals concentrate around water sources — making night drives and dawn walks more productive. The drive on QL20 is at its most straightforward in dry weather.
• May to November (wet season): The forest is at its most lush and bird activity is high. Trails can be muddy and some areas flood. Night drives continue but sightings shift — different species are more active in the wet season. QL20 is fine in rain; the park interior roads are manageable with a good vehicle.
• Departure timing from Can Tho: Leave at 6:00–7:00am. This gets you through the delta on the expressway before midday, through Dầu Giây for lunch, and to Cat Tien by 2:00–3:00pm — early enough to register, settle in, and join an afternoon activity before the night drive.

What to do at Cat Tien:

• Night drives (xe jeep đêm): The main reason most people come. Open jeeps with spotlights on the park road after dark the ranger drives slowly and sweeps the tree line and grassland edges. Gaur, deer, and civets are common; birds roosting in trees are also visible. Book through your lodge or the park office on arrival.
• Dawn birdwatching walks: The park's 350+ bird species include hornbills, pittas, kingfishers, and the green peafowl. The trail near the park headquarters is productive from first light. Bring binoculars; the park can arrange guides.
• Crocodile Lake (Bàu Sấu): A seasonal wetland about 10 km from the park headquarters the only wild Siamese crocodile habitat in Vietnam. Accessible by guided walk or bicycle; boat trips on the lake are available in the wet season when water levels are high enough.
• Ben Cu Rapids and forest trails: The Đồng Nai River has rapids accessible by short hike from the park interior. Swimming is possible in dry season. The trails through the primary forest between the river and the park road are among the most rewarding walks in southern Vietnam.
• Tà Lài village (outside the park): A S'tiêng minority village on the southern edge of the park buffer zone. Some families offer homestays and can arrange traditional forest activities. Worth an afternoon if you're staying multiple nights.
