The bridge area in Da Nang is a good stretch point before heading on to Hue. Otherwise, an even shorter stop at one of the restaurants on the side of the road in Phu Yen or Quang Nam would also do.

Mang Lang Church (Phu Yen) — approx. 1h 15m from Quy Nhon: Located right on the northbound route, this is one of the oldest churches in Vietnam, featuring distinctive Gothic architecture. It is home to the very first book printed in the modern Vietnamese script (Chu Quoc Ngu). A 20-minute stop here adds significant cultural depth to your journey.

Ghenh Da Dia (Phu Yen) — approx. 1h 30m from Quy Nhon: A natural wonder consisting of unique hexagonal basalt columns stacked neatly together. Since it is situated quite close to the main road, this is an unmissable check-in spot to admire a volcanic masterpiece formed millions of years ago.

Dam Chuon & Tam Giang Lagoon (Thua Thien Hue) — final 45 minutes before Hue: Instead of heading straight to the city center, you can visit the largest brackish water lagoon system in Southeast Asia. The peaceful scenery, featuring traditional fishing boats and stilt houses on the water, offers a sense of tranquility before you enter the Ancient Capital.

Da Nang City — approx. 4h from Quy Nhon: This serves as the perfect midpoint break. You can spend 60–90 minutes enjoying lunch and a quick visit to the Dragon Bridge, My Khe Beach, or Son Tra Peninsula. Even if you are in a rush, a quick coffee by the Han River is enough to feel the vibrant energy of this city.

Travel Notes

• Depart Quy Nhon between 6:30-7:00 am: 7:00 am departure gets you to Hue by midday with even one good stop included. That way, you have all the evening in Hue to go for the first walk on the Perfume River and a dinner in town for the big day tomorrow.
• Do not use the tunnel through Hai Van Pass: the tunnel through Hai Van Pass is an expressway that cuts off half an hour and has absolutely nothing. Using the older Hai Van Pass will take 30 minutes but will be one of the best things you do on your trip. Inform your driver during booking — not on the actual day since your route is already programmed.
• The weather in Hue is quite different from Quy Nhon: the Hai Van Pass is like a climatic boundary. Quy Nhon can be 28°C and bright sunny while Hue is 18°C and rainy in February. Check the weather forecast for Hue specifically — not the generic central Vietnam one.
• From September to January, Hue experiences rainfall: floods in the area surrounding the Perfume River are quite common in October and November. The road is often open, although it might be a bit slower. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and check the conditions the previous day if you’re traveling during these months.
• Allocate a minimum of two days to Hue: the Imperial Citadel tour alone will take up an entire morning. Each tomb – Tu Duc, Minh Mang, and Khai Dinh – merits an hour. The food deserves a half day too. With one day in Hue, you will simply be passing through.
