Private Car Service from Cat Ba Island to Sapa
Transfering from Cat Ba Island to Sapa is a process involving logistical details that can easily be underestimated. The first challenge is finding the right way around an island with few road signs and a tendency for GPS to diverge from reality. Next comes making your way to the right ferry dock (Cai Vieng, not Dong Bai) and then a more 6 hour ride along the CT05 Expressway that will get you there safely but efficiently and demands that you stay focused while passing through the industrial outskirts of Hanoi and finally onto the mountain roads leading to Sapa. All of this will be done for you by Mui Ne Private Car – your driver knows all about the island, the ferry terminal procedures, the route through the expressways and into the mountain roads of Sapa, and exactly how to get you to your address in Sapa.
It would be foolish to try to arrange all of that yourself – ferries depart on time, expressway driving requires focus, and navigating the Sapa mountain roads when you are tired will require care on your part.

Feedback from our travelers using Mui Ne Private Car Service
Leaving Cat Ba Island means crossing back to the mainland, and there are two crossing options. Both routes then continue via the same CT05 expressway to Sapa. Choose based on what experience fits your schedule and preference.
This is a simple route. Your personal car will come for you from your Cat Ba Island accommodation and transport you to the Cai Vieng Ferry Terminal in northern Cat Ba Island. The ferry journey lasts around 25 to 30 minutes and can be enjoyable. Once you reach the Dong Bai Ferry Terminal in Hai Phong, your driver joins and then proceeds through CT05 Expressway all the way to Sapa passing Hanoi.
Also your ferry ticker cost is included in the overall cost. This ferry journey marks your last views of Cat Ba's stunning karsts.
For traverlers looking to have a cable car ride as part of their round-trip journey. Your private car will drive you to the Cat Ba Cable Car terminal at the island. Take the cable car for an aerial journey back to the mainland (paid separately - not included in our transfer charge). Once exiting the cable car, your driver will wait for you to continue driving along the CT05 expressway to Sapa.
The cable car provides amazing bay views throughout the trip. Please allow 30-45 minutes for cable car ride time and additional waiting time.
Note: The cost of the cable car ticket is not included in the transfer price and has to be paid additionally at the Cable Car station.
Traveling from Cat Ba Island to Sapa by private car takes about 447 km, taking about 6 hours and 20 minutes by road via the Cai Vieng Ferry Terminal and CT05 Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway. This does not include the ferry crossing or the cable car duration, which is 25-30 minutes or 30-45 minutes respectively. So assuming one starts traveling at 8 AM, they will be at Sapa before evening hours.
The CT05 expressway is where one travels most of the distance effectively. The expressway is a new and well-paved four-lane road, with many places for resting, and good signage all through. The stretch between Hai Phong and through the industrial area near Hanoi experiences more traffic; however, the expressway is well-organized, and traveling is swift.
Beyond Hanoi, there is a change in scenery – from urban areas to rural landscapes, lowlands to foothills. As one leaves CT05 to enter the mountainous regions through the roads to Sapa, one feels that they are now in the region of elevation changes – the air cooler, plants green and abundant, and the roads slow and winding.

Cat Ba Island to Sapa Private Car Transfer via Cai Vieng Ferry & CT05 Expressway
Cat Ba Island is a fairly small island, measuring 285 square kilometers, but navigating your way out of the island via street transport can be a challenge for first-time travelers. Cai Vieng Ferry Terminal is located on the northern part of the island and there is no clear indication of its location along the streets. Your driver will know where to go and will take you there directly without any diversion.
It is best to leave early; before 9 AM, the ferry terminal is empty, and you will have the benefit of leaving from the shore in the morning when the waves are at their most gentle. An 8 AM departure will put you in Sapa with plenty of time to enjoy the day in the town, but an 11 AM departure means a shorter amount of daylight.
The most common and depenable. Leave Cat Ba Island before 8 AM to catch the ferry by 9:30 AM and have the rest of the day to enjoy.
Operate all through the day. Late departures arrive at Sapa on the same day but have less cushion time
Very uncommon, only during monsoon seasons. Ferry can be delayed or rescheduled; you will be informed immediately by your driver your driver
Before your travel begins, you will be sent your driver's name, contact number, vehicle type, vehicle registration number, and exact pickup time at your hotel on Cat Ba Island via WhatsApp messages. Additionally, your choice of route (cable car or ferry), ferry schedule, and other related details will be updated.
Your driver comes to your hotel at the arranged time. Checking out the bags from the hotel and ensuring nothing is left behind in coordination with the hotel receptionist, you begin traveling north toward the ferry terminal. It will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to get there based on your exact location on the island. Your driver drives directly towards it without the misleading turns made by tourists.
At the terminal, your driver assists you in getting on board. After collecting your luggage, you can proceed toward the ferry embarkation lounge where you depart approximately half an hour after arriving at the terminal.
Ferry (Option 1): The transfer will take about 25-30 minutes. Open deck seating – you can enjoy watching the limestone karsts disappear behind you while getting closer to the Hai Phong coastline. On arrival at the Dong Bai port, make your way to baggage claim following other passengers, where you will be greeted by your driver who has arrived on another ferry in advance.
Cable Car (Option 2): The cable car trip provides breathtaking views of the bay throughout your crossing, and it is definitely worth experiencing, if it’s your first time on Halong Bay. Buy your cable car tickets at the island terminal in cash or by card (this is not included in our transfer rates). The trip by cable car takes 20-25 minutes, followed by 10-15 minutes of disembarking.
As soon as you get inside the vehicle again and get going on the CT05 highway, things get back to normal again. The highway is good in that it is efficient with its four-lane road and a smooth surface. It is quite busy between Hai Phong and the Hanoi outskirts but still orderly. Central Hanoi is not covered in the expressway.
Going northeast of Hanoi, the scenery starts changing — starting from a rural countryside then into the foothills and finally mountains. The CT05 runs all the way to Lao Cai, after which you take off from the expressway to go into the mountains towards Sapa. You travel the last 40 – 50 km at a very slow speed because the road twists and turns quite a bit.
Your driver delivers you directly to your Sapa hotel or the exact address you provided at booking. Luggage assistance included. Your driver confirms check-in details and ensures you have everything before departing. The full journey — from Cat Ba hotel to Sapa hotel — is completed under one driver and one booking. No transition, no handed-off luggage, no confusion. The driver takes you all the way to your hotel in Sapa or wherever you told him about. Luggage delivery is done as part of the service. The driver checks everything with you to ensure that nothing was left out before he leaves. The whole tour from the Cat Ba hotel to your Sapa hotel is done using just one driver and one booking.
