If the main ferry terminal (Cai Vieng) gets heavily congested, your driver may proactively switch the route to the Gia Luan - Tuan Chau Ferry (Ha Long Bay).
The Pro: It helps you completely bypass the massive traffic gridlocks and hours of waiting at the Cai Vieng pier on Sunday afternoons or public holidays.
The Con: Your overall travel time to Mai Chau will be significantly longer. You will need to drive 45 minutes north to Gia Luan pier, take a longer ferry ride (45–50 minutes), and then take the Ha Long - Hai Phong Expressway before joining the main highway to Hanoi and Hoa Binh.
