Distance, Travel Time and the Route
The distance from Ninh Binh to Cao Bang is 378 kilometers on route QL4A with a projected travel time of 7 hours and 18 minutes. This isn’t your ordinary express trip because you have to cross three different terrain types and the last part of the road leading to Cao Bang is mountainous highland terrain.
Leaving at 7 am in the morning will land you in Cao Bang around midday when you still have time to check-in, orient yourself, and either settle down for the day or continue the trip. Leaving at 9 am is feasible too, but you’ll arrive just when the sun starts to set.
There’s no train available for travel. There’s no domestic flight for you. Not even a direct express bus. But there is a road, a driver who knows it well, and a vehicle capable of taking you there.
Note on Cao Bang ATMs: There are ATMs available in Cao Bang Town. However, no ATMs are available on the route from Lang Son to Cao Bang. It is advisable to withdraw money before heading off from Ninh Binh or Hanoi in case you need it upon arrival.

- Depart by 7:00 AM: leaving by 7 am allows for a comfortable arrival in Cao Bang before sunset; this is important because it can be difficult to find your way around in Cao Bang at night when it is new to you, and late check-ins may not be available.
- Take cash before traveling: there are ATMs in Cao Bang town but they don’t always work for foreigners. There isn’t anything along the road between Lang Son and Cao Bang. Take Vietnamese Dong before you travel if you need any cash for deposit payments, local meals or Ban Gioc.
- The best months are September to October: Ban Gioc Falls are at their best during this period after heavy rains; the karst region is greener and wilder. The Ban Gioc guesthouses fill up fast, so reserve your accommodations before making this journey, not the other way round.
- Section QL4A is the scenic marvel: the journey between Lang Son and Cao Bang will justify its reputation. You'll miss something interesting if you sleep on the journey through this section: the view from the window is worth seeing here. Ask your guide for a short stop on the road to take pictures.
- Mobile signals may drop out between Lang Son and Cao Bang: mobile signal is patchy along parts of QL4A in the highlands. It's recommended that you download offline maps for Cao Bang Province in advance and confirm your accommodation number on WhatsApp prior to leaving Lang Son as you may be without signal for the entire trip.
- Expect to spend a minimum of two nights in Cao Bang: visiting Ban Gioc Falls takes up a whole day itself. Adding Nguom Ngao Cave or Thang Hen Lake or even visiting a village adds another day to a minimum stay of two nights.

What is the best time of year for this route?
September to October for Ban Gioc at full flow and green karst landscapes. March to May for pleasant temperatures before the heat. December to February is cold and very quiet - beautiful for the scenery, challenging for accommodation. Avoid July and August if possible - peak rainfall can affect QL4A road conditions in the highlands.
