Hai Van Pass or Hai Van Tunnel: Which One Should You Choose?
This is the one real decision on this trip, so here it is in plain terms.
The tunnel is a road tunnel of about 6 km under the mountain. It is the fastest and smoothest way, and it does not depend on the weather. Choose the tunnel if you are short on time, if you have a train or a flight to catch in Hue, or if the day is rainy or foggy.
The pass is the old mountain road that climbs to almost 500 metres above the sea. It adds about 12 km and around 30 minutes of driving. At the top you can stop at the old Hai Van Gate and look down over Da Nang Bay on one side and Lang Co on the other. Most trucks and buses use the tunnel, so the pass road is quiet and used mostly by cars and motorbikes. Choose the pass if the weather is clear and you want the journey itself to be part of your trip.
You do not have to decide when you book. The price is the same either way, and you can confirm the road with your driver on the morning of the trip, based on the weather that day.
Da Nang to Hue Travel Q&A
What is the best way to travel from Da Nang to Hue?
It depends on what you need from the trip. The train takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and runs along the coast, but it goes from station to station, so you still need a taxi at both ends, and it leaves at fixed times. Limousine vans and shuttle buses are cheap per person, but they run on their own schedule and share the car with other passengers. The bus is the cheapest option and the slowest. A private car is the simplest way when you have luggage or travel in a group: it leaves when you are ready, takes you door to door, and it is the only option where you can choose the pass and stop for photos on the way.
How long does the drive from Da Nang to Hue take?
From pickup to drop-off, allow between 2 and 3.5 hours for the whole trip. The driving times for the tunnel and for the pass are in the Route Overview above. What stretches the trip is not the distance. It is the traffic leaving central Da Nang at busy hours, and the stops you choose on the way. Each photo stop usually adds about 15 to 20 minutes. Can we stop along the way?
Yes. Your Da Nang to Hue private car can stop anywhere along the road at no extra charge, as long as we agree the stops when you book. Can you pick us up at Da Nang Airport?
Yes. Please give us your flight number when you book, so we can track your flight. If your flight is delayed or anything changes, we will know about it and arrange the pickup time to match. Your driver will be waiting at the arrivals area with a name board when you land. Pickup at Da Nang train station works the same way. From the airport, the drive to Hue takes the same 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on the road you choose.
Is one day enough for Hue?
One full day is enough for the main sights: the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda and one royal tomb, with an early start. Two days is more relaxed, and it leaves time for a second tomb and the Perfume River. If you sleep in Da Nang and come back the same evening, the trip is booked as a Hue day trip instead of a one-way transfer.
Your Journey from Da Nang to Hue
Step 1: Pickup in Da Nang
Your driver comes to your hotel or address in Da Nang at the time you booked. At the airport or the train station, the driver waits with a name board so you can find the car easily. The Imperial City
The walled citadel of the Nguyen dynasty stands on the north bank of the Perfume River, in the centre of Hue. It is the city's most famous sight. Allow at least half a day inside: the grounds are large, and the gates, temples and courtyards take time to walk.

Thien Mu Pagoda
Hue's oldest pagoda stands on a hill above the Perfume River, a short drive west of the city centre. Its seven-storey tower is the symbol of Hue. Most visitors spend about an hour here and combine it with the Imperial City on the same day.
Khai Dinh Tomb
The tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh sits on a hillside south of the city. It is the most ornate of the royal tombs, covered inside with glass and porcelain mosaics. It is the tomb most often chosen by visitors who only have time for one.
Dong Ba Market
Hue's biggest local market sits by the river, east of the citadel. Come here for local food and souvenirs, and to see daily life in Hue away from the monuments.
